Lugu Lake

Lugu Lake is an alpine lake located on the border between Ninglang county in Yunnan province and Yanyuan county in Sichuan province, China. Situated at an altitude of 2,690 meters, it is renowned for its scenic beauty and the unique culture of the indigenous Mosuo people. The lake covers an area of approximately 48.5 square kilometers and has a maximum depth of 93.5 meters. It is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Plateau" due to its picturesque landscape and crystal-clear waters.
Geography and Natural Features
Nestled in the Yulong Snow Mountain range, Lugu Lake is surrounded by majestic peaks and lush forests. The lake is dotted with several small islands, the most prominent of which is Lige Island. The area boasts diverse flora and fauna, including numerous species of birds and aquatic life. The natural beauty of Lugu Lake is further enriched by its tranquil environment, with alpine flowers blooming along its shores and dense forests covering the surrounding hills.
Mosuo Culture
The Mosuo people inhabit the region around Lugu Lake. Their social structure is characterized by matrilineal descent, where family lineage is traced through the female line. The Mosuo women hold significant roles in both the household and the community, managing family affairs and making economic decisions.
The Mosuo people living by Lugu Lake celebrated the Mountain Worship Festival (also known as zhuanshanjie) in Southwest China's Yunnan province, on July 25 of the lunar calendar. Since ancient times, they have learned to appreciate the relationship between nature and humans.
The Mountain Worship Festival originated over 1,000 years ago. It is one of the oldest festivals among Chinese ethnic cultures. On every July 25 of the lunar calendar, the Mosuo people will climb the Gemu Mountain to pay tribute to Goddess Gemu and worship nature. After the ceremony, people light bonfires and boil buttered tea. They eat and sing songs together. Young Mosuo men and women take the opportunity to look for a partner.
A walking marriage (or zouhun) is the most prominent marital practice in Mosuo culture. The children in a walking marriage are raised by the mother and her extended family.

Conservation and Challenges
While tourism has brought economic benefits to the region, it has also posed challenges to the preservation of Mosuo culture and the natural environment of Lugu Lake. Efforts are being made to balance tourism development with cultural preservation, ensuring that the unique heritage of the Mosuo people is maintained for future generations. Environmental conservation measures are also crucial to protect the lake's ecosystem and sustain its biodiversity. Article reference1. Lugu Lake's Kingdom of Women. chinadaily.com.cn. 20182.
